11 April 2008: Glass goes into the Contemporary DVC Tower

The contemporary tower continues to rise, but most notably, glass windows are now appearing in the lower levels. The vertical supports for the connecting bridge are now complete, and the horizontal supports are now in place.

26 February 2008: Contemporary DVC Tower to be called The Kingdom Tower?

There is an interesting article over at the Orlando Sentinel today revealing that Disney are calling this project "The Kingdom Tower". Some other information revealed in permits includes - A new swimming pool large enough for 180 people and featuring two hot tubs and a 104-foot-long water slide. Two large permanent tower cranes are now onsite, and progress is moving rapidly on the vertical construction of the tower.

Foundations are now clearly visible on the site, and work is progressing at quite a pace, with a large amount of equipment and construction workers on site. Thanks to ScottJ for the photos.

31 January 2007: Contemporary North Wing now being demolished

In preparation for the new DVC Tower, demolition of the North Wing at the Contemporary Resort is now very much underway. The tennis courts are completely gone, and the main building of the North Wing is now being demolished.

23 January 2007: Disney Vacation Club at the Contemporary Resort update

Since early 2006 we have been tracking the speculation that the Disney Vacation Club will soon be coming to the Contemporary Resort. More details have begun to emerge on this story, and the latest information is that work will begin imminently on the demolition of the existing 3 story tall North Wing of the Contemporary (The left hand side if facing the Contemporary from the front of the resort). Once the demolition is complete, a new crescent shaped, 16 story tower will be built on the site. The expected completion date of the project will be late 2009.

The photo below shows the current closed off North Wing that is set to be demolished.

25 October 2006: Contemporary North refurbishment wall photos

Further to the 21 October update below, these new photos show the scale of the refurbishment wall. If you look closely, you can see the wall surrounding the building and the parking lot. Thanks to Daniel for the photos.

21 October 2006: Construction walls at the Contemporary

A new 9 foot tall construction wall (screened with green) has been erected around the north wing of the contemporary, the racquetball courts, and half of the parking lot right by the north wing. There are also reports that parking at the STOLport will no longer be permitted for cast events from November 1. This news seems to coincide with the 11 March update below regarding some major upcoming construction at the Contemporary.

11 March 2006: Construction project at the Contemporary Resort

The long abandoned STOL airport near to the Transportation and Ticket Centre is set to be turned over to Imagineering from September 2006 until December 2009. It is speculated that this large area will be used as a staging area for a huge construction project at the Contemporary Resort. Rumors link the construction project to a possible introduction of a Disney Vacation Club wing. This information is not yet officially confirmed, and may be subject to change.
